Only works that fall under the definition of “musical works” according to copyright law are eligible for registration. Here’s a list of works that do not qualify for registration and therefore cannot be submitted:
- Covers: KOSIGN handles the underlying compositions of original songs, so cover versions cannot be registered.
- Non-Musical Works & Sound Effects: Nature sounds, animal calls, thunder, white noise, and mechanical sounds like car horns and doorbells are considered sound effects, not musical works.
- Spoken Word: Works composed solely of spoken word or narration, without any musical backing, do not meet the requirements for submission. If your spoken word piece is accompanied by music created by you, however, it may be eligible for administration.
- Binaural & Meditation Sounds: Hypnosis, self-help, relaxation, and therapeutic recordings are not eligible unless they contain original musical compositions.
- Public Domain: Works in the public domain are not accepted unless they are new, unique arrangements with original content.
- Royalty-Free Music: Music created for royalty-free use or purchased from stock libraries cannot be submitted as original work.
